38101 - COSMOS 2479

Cosmos 2479, a Russian military satellite, was launched on 30 March 2012 from Baikonur at 05:49 UT by a Proton-K rocket. The craft weighed 700 tonnes. The satellite is a US-KMO missile detection spacecraft, which is operated as part of the Oko network of early-warning satellites. US-KMO consists of satellites placed into geosynchronous orbit to monitor missile launches via infrared telescopes. Cosmos 2479 is stationed in geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles over the equator giving the platform a view of nearly half of Earth. This launch is the 311th and final launch for the Proton-K rocket.
