ViaSat 1, a communication satellite, was launched from Baikonur on 19 October 2011 at 18:48 UT. The satellite was launched by a Proton rocket and weighed 6740 kg. It provides services for North America and Canada. At the time of its launch, ViaSat 1 was the world's highest capacity communications satellite, with a total capacity in excess of 140 Gbps. It carries 72 Ka-band spot beams; 63 over the U.S. (Eastern and Western states, Alaska and Hawai), and nine over Canada. ViaSat 1 has a circular geostationary orbit of 22,300 miles above the planet at 115 degrees W longitude. It has a design life of more than 15 years.
