EUTELSAT 16A, a European communications satellite, was launched from Xichang on 07 October 2011 at 08:21 UT by a Long March 3B rocket. The satellite provides new capacity for broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband services across Central Europe, Africa and Indian Ocean islands. It carries 56 transponders, 53 in Ku-band and 3 in Ka-band, with an end-of-life power of 12kW. EUTELSAT 16A is positioned at 16 degrees E longitude, replacing three Eutelsat satellites currently at that location. It has a design life of more than 15 years.
