SATMEX 5 was a Mexican communications satellite launched from the Kourou space center in French Guiana aboard an Ariane rocket. It offered nearly 8,000 watts of power and carried 48 transponders, 24 in C-band and 24 in Ku-band. It was the fifth satellite Hughes Space and Communications Company built that used XIPS. It provided improved services, such as business communications, television distribution, educational programming, and others, with high reliability. The satellite beams expanded to include the whole American continent, providing services to countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Peru, Venezuela and the US, among others.
