When following a FODMAP diet, it is recommended you work with an experienced dietitian. Doing so can help you to:
- Identify high FODMAP foods in your diet and low FODMAP alternatives
- Follow the least restrictive diet necessary to achieve symptom control.
- Individualise diet, based on your symptom severity and individual needs.
- Ensure that your low FODMAP diet is nutritionally adequate.
- Troubleshoot if your symptoms do not improve on a low FODMAP diet.
- Guide you through the FODMAP challenges in Step 2 of the diet
- Interpret your FODMAP challenge results and help you to expand your diet as much as possible in Step 3, while still maintaining symptom control
- Refer you on for other therapies (e.g. gut directed hypnotherapy, stress management, medication) that may improve your IBS symptoms.
