A cover letter is your opportunity to show the recruiter that you can write clearly and concisely. Use the cover letter to go beyond what is on your resume. In other words, don’t just repeat what you have already written on your resume.
Cover letter format
- Use the same heading you use on your resume.
- Date it.
- Include employer’s contact information.
- Why you are writing.
- What you have to offer.
- What will happen next.
- Closing.
- Your Name.
Some pointers:
- Keep it short and straight to the point.
- Carefully follow directions provided by the employer, some will require specific information on the cover letter.
- Don’t use a generic template, tailor your cover letter to what you know of the employer and the position and highlight where the fit with your experience and skills lies.
- Use a professional language but don’t over do it with the jargon.
- Be energetic and positive but don’t exaggerate, don’t come across as desperate.
