Assume that your salary negotiation will end up midway between the two opening negotiating positions:
- It doesn’t always happen but it’s a good assumption to make.
- If the employer is offering $110,000 and you want $120,000, you should ask for $130,000.
Key reasons for doing it:
- Resolving the issue by having both sides concede equal amounts seems fair.
- It’s not necessarily fair because it depends on the opening position that each side took, but it seems fair.
- Key point: you must get the employer to make you an offer before you bracket.
- You’re at a disadvantage if you have to state your compensation expectations before they make an offer.
- If you can get the employer to offer first, you can bracket that proposal so that if you end up in the middle, you get what you want.
