Your Resume: Don’ts

Don’t

• Use standard resume templates found in wizards.
• Use jargon/buzzwords.
• Use two pages if your experience is less than 10 years.
• List more than about 15 years worth of job experience.
• Emphasize skills and job activities you don't want to do in the future.
• Include your height, weight, age, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, sex, ethnicity/race, health, social security number, religion, reasons for leaving previous job(s), names of former supervisors, or phone numbers of former employers, picture of yourself, or salary information.
• Lie on your resume.
• Use personal pronouns (I, my, me).
• Leave out the locations of your past jobs (city and state).
• Use expressions like "Duties included," "Responsibilities included," or "Responsible for".
• List your high school.
• Use justified text blocks.
• List references.
• Use colored paper or graphics, unless it is for an arts related job.
• Try to come across as a jack-of-all trades.
• Misrepresent yourself. Don’t try to “advertise” someone who you are really not.
