Before you negotiate, bear in mind that if you want to justify your big increase in pay, you have to be prepared to show the employer what they’re going to get for their money.
Have something good to trade off:
- Don’t ask a boss for a raise in pay because you are going to buy a house or going to get married. Today’s employers are not going to give you a raise in pay because they like you or because you need the extra money.
- Don’t expect cost of living increases.
- If it’s appropriate, suggest working for a percentage of the gross profit increase. Employers hate to do it, but it’s a great negotiating strategy.
Make your case:
- Develop a plan that shows your employer what you’re going to do for them next year.
- Tell them all the wonderful things you’re going to do for them in that new position.
- Convince your manager that you’re going to be a huge success that will make their company money and make them look good too.
Build desire. Only when you have built desire, are you ready to start your negotiation. (See STAGES TO GETTING THE OFFER Card)
