Doorknob Close

If all else fails, thank the interviewer and start to leave. As your hand hits the doorknob on the way out, try making a second effort. Never assume everything is over, you can always try to get back in the game.

Example:

With your hand on the doorknob say, “It was really nice talking with you, I am sorry we couldn’t get to an offer. Perhaps sometime in the future we can work together.”

You appear to be leaving but you pause pensively and say, “Would you mind helping me? I always try to learn something from every employment interview. Would you mind telling me what made you turn away from a positive decision? It will help me so much in the future.”

After you get the employers feedback, you can gently thank them for sharing and slide back into your presentation.
