Return Serve Close

When you are served a clarifying question, don’t just answer the question. Use the opportunity to get a commitment by returning the serve.

When you are asked a question during a negotiation, sometimes it’s better to reply with a question that can get you a commitment from the employer.

Example:

When the HR director looks as though they’re close to making a decision to hire you and serves you a clarifying question, return the serve and in doing so, you’ll be getting a commitment.

When the employer says: “Can you start right away?” say: “Would you like me to start right away?”

“Would you work on salary plus commission?” you respond, “Are you offering me salary plus commission?”
