Always assume employer will say “yes” to your salary request. Don’t say a word until you find out whether they will or they won’t.
Example:
- Interviewer might say: “What are your salary expectations?”
- You say, “Based on my qualifications and experience I expect a minimum salary of $200,000.” Now don’t say a word. Don’t assume that they’re going to accuse you of having outrageous expectations. Your interviewer may be thinking: “He/she is worth it, but how am I going to convince my boss?”
We are not used to silence. A minute of silence seems like eternity. Remember that once the silence has started, the next person to talk loses. The next person to open their mouth will make a concession.
