Thoroughbred horse photographers want the horse to stand in a particular way. If the horse doesn’t, they lead it around the paddock to get its mind off of the way it chose to stand. Interviewers may say “no” to you for no more reason than the horse chose to stand that way.
Don’t try to force the employer to change his mind. First, take their mind off the decision they made.
Example
- “I see that you went to HBS. Did you take Professor Smith’s class?”
- “Did you start with the company in New York? That’s where I went to school.”
- “Before I go, could I ask you about that golf trophy? I used to play golf back home.”
- “Are you attending the Marketing Conference this year? I heard you presented last year.”
- “Is that tombstone for a public offering?” Who were the underwriters?”
