Tiny tugboats can move huge oil tankers around if they do it a little bit at a time. Similarly, you can change the interviewer’s mind a little bit at a time. Employers do change their minds. Just because he or she told you “no” a minute ago, an hour ago, or yesterday, doesn’t mean that they’ll say “no” again. Ask them one more time.
Examples of questions to prolong the interview:
- “Could I ask you another question about how you choose an applicant?”
- “Are there some tests that you would like me to take?”
- “Could I meet with the person to whom I would report?”
- “Let me tell you a little more about my experience handling problems at my former company.”
- “I imagine integrating work teams after the merger has been a challenge, does the company have an internal coaching program in place?”
- “Did I mention my role in the XYZ project? Let me give you a few details so you get a better sense of what I can accomplish.”
- “I heard your company recently acquired a CRM system, let me tell you about the CRM initiatives I successfully implemented with my former employer.”
