If you want to substantially improve your odds of starting on a good salary, do the following:
- Do your research before negotiating. Find out the industry average salary and benefits. Learn as much as you can about the company’s pay scale. (See HOW MUCH TO ASK FOR Card)
- Have a clear idea of what your minimum salary expectations are. Don’t waste your time interviewing for a low-paying job in a company or industry that may not be able to offer the salary you expect.
- Emphasize your skills and mention if you earned performance bonuses or incentive awards in your current/previous job. (See STRESSING SKILLS Card)
- Show them what they’re going to get for their money - Don’t ask for a good starting salary because you are going to get married or have a baby! The interview is always about what you can do for them! (See 3 KEY REQUIREMENTS Card)
- Be sure you are negotiating with someone who can say yes and has the power and authority to reach an agreement about a starting salary with you.
