Handling Money Issues
Before you interview, be prepared to handle money-related objections:
- If you get a low offer: try to negotiate a counter offer face-to-face. If you can’t make an appointment, write a letter. (See DON’T AGREE TO FIRST PROPOSAL Card)
- Counter offer discussion/letter should make these points:
- You want to work in the company, compensation is the only stumbling block.
- Restate all great things you could do in the position.
- Mention you have another offer with better pay.
- Ask for more than you expect to get. Imply some flexibility.
- Support requested amount with research.
- List items in which you have reached agreement.
- Prepare to handle these discussion using the Negotiation Gambits in the Getting a Raise section.
- Once you have agreed on a package, ask for it in writing and be sure it includes all of the details.
