How to stand out at an interview when there are a lot of applicants.
- You want to come across as a highly desirable applicant who will be choosing from a myriad of offers.
- A good way to project your interest and that you have options is to take some time at the end of the interview to see if they can offer you what you expect from an employer.
- After the interviewer has asked you her questions, you ask your questions. They might include:
- Who are your major competitors and how are you better than them?
- What is your division’s main focus in the coming year?
- How does your company train, track performance and reward its best employees?
- Do you always try to promote from within?
- Where do you think this company will be five years from now and what role will your division play in the strategy?
- How would I best be able to help your division achieve its goals?
- Are you prepared to make an offer today?
- When will I hear from you? Can I follow up with you next week?
Asking relevant and specific questions projects that you are interested and have done your homework, but also that you are not going to jump at the first job offered and that you have many options. This gives you power in the subsequent salary negotiation.
