Networking is about building a network of career contacts that can provide support, information, advice and help you to obtain both job leads and referrals.
Since most of the jobs available never get advertised, networking is a key element of your job search efforts.
To get started:
- Remember this is a life long exercise, not just something to do when you need something.
- Build a Linked-in profile and start reaching out to people.
- Identify contacts through current network, join networking groups specific to your likes and/or career, companies you like, etc.
- Set-up short "advice" meetings (meet them ñ at their office, for a cup of coffee, at a networking event, etc.)
- Be prepared with well thought out questions from the research you have done.
- Prepare and know your 30-second elevator pitch inside out.
- Maintain professionalism at all times.
- Seek advice about the company, industry, specific job functions, etc.
- After the meeting, periodically follow-up and be sure to thank them for their time.
- Don't always seek something, but provide something for them as well.
