Creating empty documents

If you want to start with an empty document, to start recording, or pasting audio, for instance, tap the '+' button at the lower left hand corner of the document list.

You will have the option to create a mono or stereo document, and will then start editing the new empty document.

Recording

Recording is as easy as tapping the record button. TwistedWave will start recording at the cursor position, and insert the newly recorded audio in the file.

Selecting the microphone

Different recording situations may require using different microphones.

You can select the microphone to use for recording either by tapping the microphone button that appears in the toolbar while you are recording, or do a long tap on the record button. You will then be presented with the list of available microphones.

Stereo recording

It is possible to record audio in stereo with the built-in microphone. In order to enable stereo recording from the built-in microphone, you should:

Also keep in mind that, like when you are shooting a movie, you should not rotate your iPhone after you have started recording. For a better stereo image, you should use your iPhone in landscape mode when recording in stereo.

Importing files

TwistedWave can load existing audio files in the AIFF, AIFC, MP3, MPEG4(AAC), AU or SD2 file formats.

There are many different ways to import audio files in TwistedWave:

Exporting files

The export options are available by tapping the button in the top right hand corner, when in editing mode.

TwistedWave can save audio files in the WAVE, AIFF, CAF or AAC file formats. TwistedWave can also send your audio files to a server that will convert them to mp3 files online.

There are a few ways to share audio from TwistedWave:

Browser access

An easy way to get files in and out of TwistedWave is available with the browser access. If you are connected to a wifi network, you can activate it by tapping "Sharing" at the bottom of the document list view, and enable it.

You can then open a browser, and enter the address shown in the "Browser Access" panel, or access it with Bonjour: in Safari, select "Bookmarks / Show All Bookmarks", and in the Bonjour collection, double click on the TwistedWave bookmark.

From your browser, you will be able to play and download the files from your document list.

The browser access also offers a convenient way to upload a file and open it in TwistedWave.

Editing

Playing audio

You can start and stop playing by tapping the "Play" button in the upper toolbar.

An easier way is simply to tap anywhere in the overview of the waveform, just above the main waveform display.

Selecting

In order to select some audio, you can tap and drag the handle that appears above the yellow cursor.

It is also possible to start selecting by double-tapping in the waveform where you want to start selecting.

Applying effects

First select the region where you want the effect to be applied. If you don't, the effect is applied on the whole file.

Then, tap the "Effects" button, and select an effect from the list. Some effects allow you to adjust a few parameters and preview the effect before applying it.

Settings

The settings panel can be open by tapping the rightmost button in the toolbar, at the bottom of the document list.

32-bit temporary files

All the audio in TwistedWave is processed in floating point 32-bit. This provides a very high sound quality and dynamic range.

However, when a document is being edited, the audio is stored in temporary files. Each time an effect is applied, the audio is processed, and stored in a temporary file. In order to keep a good sound quality, and to be fast, TwistedWave does not compress these files. In order to save space, these files are stored in 16-bit by default.

In some cases, when working on files with a bit depth higher than 16-bit, it may be useful to turn the option to have '32-bit temporary files' in order to preserve the original sound quality.

Low latency recording

If you use the 'Play through' option when recording, you may notice a small delay between the audio that is recorded, and when it is played back. This can be annoying, and by enabling this option, the latency is reduced, and the audio is played through with a smaller delay.

This setting requires more CPU power, and may use more battery when recording. Some external microphones may also have trouble working with a lower latency. If you noticed some glitches in the recorded audio, you should first try disable this option.

External speakers

This option allows you to use external speakers, such as bluetooth speakers. In order to use external speakers, TwistedWave has to disable the microphone between recordings. This is often not a problem, but some microphones produce a small glitch at the beginning of the recording when they are activated. This is why this option is not enabled by default.

Bluetooth recording

This option can be enabled to allow TwistedWave to record audio from a bluetooth device, such as a headset, for instance.

Enable iOS processing

When recording with the built-in microphone, iOS will automatically adjust the microphone level. While it is often a good idea, if you want to manually adjust the levels, it is preferable to disable this option.

Prevent sleeping

Enabling this option will prevent the iPhone or iPad from sleeping while you are recording or playing back audio, allowing you to monitor the playing or input levels at all times.
