Kiosk Mode, Permissions

The kiosk mode is a special, protected mode for presentation purposes or for public information terminals, e.g. at trade fairs, in museums, in hotel lobbies, etc.

In kiosk mode, you can only access the content that is provided; settings, bookmarks and other browser features are not available.

To exit the kiosk mode, a special multi-touch gesture is used, which can also be secured with a password and, if necessary, with TouchID/FaceID.

If the kiosk is located in public areas, the device should also be physically secured using special housings. The iPad should also be secured via the system setting guided access so that you can no longer leave the active app (i.e. iCab Mobile).

Session, Contents

The kiosk always loads the specified start page at the beginning. The kiosk may also automatically return to this page later if the kiosk is inactive for a specified time (i.e. no user is using the kiosk) or when a specified usage time expires.

Therefore the start page must be always specified. Any address on the web is permitted, but files saved locally in iCab Mobile can also be selected here. Local files are addressed via the URL scheme “file:”. An address such as “file:///index.html” defines the file “index.html” from the root directory of the kiosk file storage as the start page.

To save and manage files locally in iCab, select the Files area. You can add files here using the button + (top right). Use Add file to transfer files to iCab Mobile via the Files app. Files from other devices and computers in the same WLAN can be imported via Export/Import (WLAN). iCab Mobile starts a simple web server that can be accessed with any browser on the other device or computer to transfer the files.

In Edit mode, the files can be re-sorted, moved into or out of folders.

Note: ZIP archives make it very easy to transfer and use large amounts of files, such as a complete website with all subpages, images and other resources.

In the Session section, you can specify whether the kiosk returns to the start page after a certain period of inactivity (e.g. because no user is using the kiosk). You can also generally limit the time that a user can use the kiosk.

The sleep mode can be deactivated so that the kiosk remains active even if it is not used for a longer period of time (e.g. so that it displays information permanently). If desired, the brightness can be reduced when inactive.

Web sites

Use the Web sites settings to define what web sites are allowed to do in kiosk mode and which resources they have access to (camera, sensors, printer, etc.). Font sizes can also be adjusted.

User Interface

The navigation icons section defines which options are available to the kiosk user. These icons are displayed in the kiosk view at the top and/or bottom of the screen and can also be customized in terms of color, size and style.

Previous page
Next page
Opens the start page
Reloads the page
Stops page loading
Search on current page
Prints the page
Fixed space between icons
Flexible space between icons
Ends the session (opens start page, deletes all data set in the privacy settings)

Various gestures and keyboard shortcuts can also be activated on request, which can be used as an alternative to the navigation via the icons.

Filter

The Filter settings allow to install third-party filter lists (Easylist, AdBlock Plus, uBlock etc) and self-defined filters.

Privacy

In the privacy settings you can configure the access to the camera, microphone and motion sensors can be configured and security certificates for websites can be installed.

Private data such as cookies, local web storage and caches can be automatically deleted at the end of the session. The session is deemed to have ended when the user explicitly ends it via the button , or if the kiosk automatically returns to the start page due to inactivity or expiry of the usage time.
