Websites
iCab Mobile allows you to use the Websites settings to define very broadly what websites are allowed to do, how they should be displayed and allow certain customizations to your own wishes.
Page elements (images, JavaScript) can be blocked, actions can be restricted (opening new tabs, printing, zooming, opening apps, accessing the camera, microphone, etc.) and the display of web pages can be customized (changing the font size, dark mode, user-defined customizations using your own JavaScripts and StyleSheets).
Website options
If the option Menu for text selection is deactivated, you can no longer select and copy text on web pages.
The AppStore links option controls how links to the AppStore are opened. These can be blocked completely, open the AppStore app or open the AppStore within iCab Mobile.
The option Page can change focus allows a web page to set the focus on text fields. This can be annoying on mobile devices with a software keyboard, as the keyboard opens automatically when the focus is set.
The option Page can use keyboard shortcuts only plays a role if you are using a Bluetooth keyboard. Some websites offer keyboard shortcuts (usually by pressing a key combination with the Control key) to trigger certain page functions so that you do not necessarily have to use the mouse (or finger) for control.
The option Page can prevent zooming some websites disable the ability to zoom to ensure that the design of the page is not destroyed by too large a font. However, anyone who cannot read small fonts has a problem here. This option can therefore be used to ensure that zooming is always possible.
Universal links are an iOS feature that allows apps to re-route links to their own service from other apps to themselves. For example, the Amazon app can redirect all Amazon product links to itself, even if you open them in other apps (not just browsers). Unfortunately, Apple has not provided a way to prevent this (because it is often not desirable to be kicked out of the app you are currently using just because another installed app feels responsible for the link you want to open), so you can disable this redirection in the iCab settings for iCab itself.
Login forms
This feature allows you to save completed login forms on web pages and have these forms filled in automatically on future visits to the page. The saved form data can be viewed and deleted here.
To save a form, first fill it out and then select the Save form menu item in the action menu
. Alternatively, the forms can also be saved using the
button attached to the keyboard. Using the button
or the menu item Fill out forms from the action menu, the forms can also be filled out automatically again.
However, iCab Mobile can also use login data stored in external password managers. To do this, you must activate (tap) the login form and can then access the installed password managers via the password button provided by iOS
.
Rewrite URLs
The rewrite URLs feature allows you to modify the original URL of a link before opening it. This can be used, for example, to remove tracking parameters or to open certain variations of websites (e.g. the site “Reddit” also offers a variant with an older page layout. This variant is accessible through a different subdomain, but normal links always point to the main domain. By rewriting URLs, you can change normal links here so that the old layout is opened).
The rules for unwriting URLs have a filter that describes the URL of the website to which the rules are to be applied. As an action, you can then replace or delete parts of the URL itself, the domain, the path or only certain query parameters.
For example, if you replace “www” with “m” in the domain, “www.youtube.com” becomes the domain “m.youtube.com” (the mobile version of the page). If you insert a “*” before or after the element to be replaced, the complete string before or after the element is also replaced. I.e. if you replace “*abc” with “xyz”, “www.abc.domain.com” becomes the domain “xyz.domain.com”.
In each rule, you can define any number of replacements that are carried out in sequence.
Text Size
You can change the text size on the website using the
icon in the browser bar. iCab Mobile remembers the text size set for each web page. You can use the text size option in the Website settings to edit these saved text sizes and also set the general minimum font size for all websites.
You can also define your own default size for all web pages, which is always used if no size has been saved for this page. To do this, simply create a new entry and define the value * as Filter (this filter applies to all pages).
Highlighter
The currently selected text can be highlighted in color via the text selection menu, as with a highlighter. These markers are retained so that they are still available the next time you visit the page. If websites with such text markers exist, a 'Text markers' item is also displayed in the settings, which can be used to delete the markers on these websites.
Important: If the web pages change or have been restructured, the marked texts may no longer be found and the markers can no longer be displayed. In this case, you should simply delete the entries again.
Hidden Page Elements
Page content can be hidden via the text selection menu (for selected text) or the context menu (for links, images). This can be used to hide disruptive or distracting elements. If hidden elements exist, the respective web pages are listed here via the 'Hidden page elements' item and can also be removed again so that the elements are displayed again.
Important: If the websites change or have been restructured, the fade-outs may no longer work. In this case, you should simply delete the entries again.
Dark mode
The
icon in the browser bar can be used to change the dark mode for websites that do not support dark mode themselves. Even though dark mode has been supported on mobile devices and computers for a long time, there are still many websites that do not support it and do not have a dark color scheme. These pages are therefore normally displayed in a light color even when dark mode is active. Using the dark mode for websites, iCab will change the colors of the websites to display them dark. However, this can go wrong, as these websites do not expect you to change their colors. Therefore, icab also offers some alternative methods to change the colors. These alternatives can be accessed by pressing and holding the icon in the browser bar. iCab Mobile remembers the dark mode set for each website.
You can use the Dark mode option in the Website settings to edit these saved values and also create them manually.
JavaScript & CSS
iCab Mobile also allows you to manipulate and extend websites using your own JavaScript or CSS code. However, this is a purely “professional” feature for which you need to be well versed in JavaScript or CSS. JavaScript and CSS can only be inserted into predefined websites.
Camera & microphone, motion sensors
These options allow you to control access to the camera, microphone and motion sensors in general and also for specific websites. By default, iCab Mobile will ask the user for permission each time a website wants to use the camera, microphone or motion sensors. However, if you use certain websites (e.g. a video conferencing system) frequently, you can simply give this site permanent permission so that you do not have to give permission again before each use. Other sites can also be denied permission across the board so that you no longer have to prohibit their use every time.
Data detectors
The options for recognizing data make it possible to automatically recognize certain data (such as telephone numbers, addresses, links, etc.) that are not offered as links on websites and convert them into a link. This data thus becomes more easily accessible.
Printing
The print options allow you to define certain specifications for printouts.
Screenshots
Screenshots of websites can be saved via the action menu
. In the settings, you can specify whether these screenshots only save the visible section or the entire page and in which resolution and format the screenshot is saved.
The app may use a lower resolution than set if the website is extremely large and the available memory is not sufficient to save it.
Security
iCab Mobile can check whether the website to be opened is a known malware or phishing site and then refuse to open it or presents a warning.
Other
Navigation on websites can be made easier using various gestures. For example, you can reload a web page by pulling it down. Swipe gestures from the left or right edge to the center of the screen can also be used to navigate forwards or backwards.
Web pages can also be provided with a scroll bar (either on the right or left), which is always visible and accessible and can be used to navigate directly to any position on a web page (so you don't have to wait a long time for the page to scroll to its destination). On this scroll bar, you simply slide your finger to the corresponding position and the page jumps there directly. If you do not touch the scroll bar, it largely disappears so that it does not obstruct the view of the website, but remains slightly visible.
When saving web pages as PDFs, it is possible to specify the page layout of the PDF (US letter, DIN A4 or a (long) single page)
