Tabs

If you want to open several websites at the same time, you can open several tabs. A tab always contains one web page.

Tab groups

iCab Mobile can also combine tabs into groups and save any number of groups. If you switch between the tab groups, all currently displayed tabs are replaced by the tabs from the selected tab group. Tab groups are therefore very useful if you need different websites for different projects and want to be able to save and switch between them in one go.

Tab groups can be managed (save, edit, delete, switch) in the tab group window, which can be accessed via the button on the far left of the tabs toolbar. Alternatively, you can also access the tab groups by holding down the tab button in the browser toolbar.

The current tabs are saved as a tab group using the button in the tab group window. A tab group has a name and an icon (which you can select from a list).

Tapping on an entry in the group list activates the respective tab group. The button allows you to edit a group.

The window with the tab groups also shows the tab history, making it possible to reopen previously closed tabs. Tabs synchronized via iCloud from other devices are also displayed here and can thus be opened.

Switch Tabs

By default, only one tab is displayed at a time, but you can switch tabs using the tabs toolbar, a tab menu or swipe gestures.

The tabs toolbar shows all tabs as buttons, tapping them switches to the respective tab. You can easily rearrange the tabs in the tabs toolbar by briefly holding your finger on a tab button (approx. 1 sec) and then moving it to the new position.
The tab buttons show either only the title of the website or also the page icon (FavIcon).
The tabs toolbar can also be switched off in the 'Tab' settings if you want to reserve more space for web pages, for example. On the iPad, this can be set separately for large and small windows, as the window sizes can vary greatly via SplitView, Slide-Over or Stage Manager.
The button on the far left of the tabs toolbar opens the list of tab groups, a long press opens the list of current tabs.
The button on the right-hand side of the tabs toolbar opens a new tab. If you press and hold the button, you can choose to open a normal or a private tab. Private tabs are completely isolated from all other tabs and do not save any data or take over any data from other tabs.

The tabs can also be accessed via the button in the browser toolbar and can be switched there via a menu. The button at the top of the tabs list also allows you to open new tabs. The Tab group button opens the list of all currently available tab groups.
If you press the button in the browser toolbar for a longer duration, the list of tab groups opens instead of the list of current tabs.

You can also activate swipe gestures via the settings, which can be used to slide a web page out of the screen to the left or right and then automatically switch to the adjacent tab.

Default content of Tabs

If you open a new tab, it can remain empty, automatically load the quick starter or the homepage, or directly open the keyboard so that you can directly enter a web address or search query.

Pin Tabs

Tabs can also be protected against accidental deletion and overwriting by pinning them. Pinned tabs can no longer be closed and only display the (sub)pages of the current domain. If you try to open another website with a different domain in a pinned tab, it will be opened in a new tab instead. Pinned tabs can also be color-coded to make them easier to recognize. The close button is also replaced with a pin icon .

Open Links

Normally, websites can specify for each link whether it should open in the same or a new tab. However, as every website pursues different goals, this is often unpredictable. For this reason, you can specify in iCab how which links should open.

Links can be opened in the current or in a new tab, whereby this can be set separately for links to other pages and links to the same page. Optionally, tabs in new tabs can also open automatically in the foreground (the new tab becomes the active one) or in the background (the current tab remains active).

Newly opened tabs can be opened either to the left or right of the current tab, or can always be appended to the very end of the tab list.

When closing tabs, you can also specify whether the app should then make the left or right neighboring tab the active one.

These general settings all apply to the normal opening of links by simply tapping on the website. However, these settings can also be bypassed at any time if required by pressing and holding a link and opening the context menu for the link. The context menu also includes entries to open the link in the current or a new tab.

Tabs history

Every tab that you close is saved in the tab history and can be opened again later via the history. The maximum number of entries saved in the tab history can be defined in the tab settings.

Inactive Tabs

Inactive tabs are tabs that are not currently displayed. You can set that newly created background tabs (i.e. tabs that are initially inactive) only load their website when the tab is actually activated and thus becomes visible. This can save memory and processor load, but delays the display after the tab is activated.
Inactive tabs can also be released again if required when the RAM memory is full. This usually allows significantly more tabs to be opened, but also requires tabs to be reloaded when they are activated. Background tabs can also be throttled or completely frozen, which can save energy and computing time, but web sites can then do less or no more work in the background (although this should rarely be relevant).
