Profiles

iCab Mobile offers user profiles, each profile has its own bookmarks, settings, downloads etc. and is completely separate from all others.

This makes the profiles feature ideal if, for example, a family shares an iPad; each family member gets their own private profile and can customize it to their own wishes without disturbing the others. Everyone has their own private area in the app.

However, profiles are also suitable if a person wants to separate different usage scenarios, e.g. separate professional projects and private use.

Three standard profiles are already predefined in iCab Mobile:

The Admin profile is the profile of the standard user. The app uses this profile by default so that users who do not need multiple profiles do not have to deal with this feature at all.

The Guest profile allows you to let other people use iCab Mobile. The guest profile has certain restrictions and automatically resets itself to its original state as soon as the guest leaves it. This means that no matter what the guest does, it will be completely undone at the end.

The Kiosk profile is intended for kiosk applications, i.e. public information terminals, e.g. in museums, trade fairs, exhibitions, hotel lobbies and other public places. In the kiosk there is no access to settings, there are no bookmarks or other browser components. The display is limited to a web page with navigation options.

Setting up a Profile

Profiles can only be created, activated or deactivated via the Admin profile. To do this, you must be logged in as an admin and can then select Profiles in the settings.

All existing profiles are then listed, which can be activated (then they will be listed in the login screen) or deactivated (they are not listed) using the respective switch.

The Configure button can be used to configure the account settings, activate restrictions, etc.
Important: If you have set up a profile for a person and they set up password protection for logging in, even the admin can only change the profile settings with the correct password.

Any number of additional user profiles can be created using the Create user profile button. Depending on requirements, these can use all browser functions almost without restrictions or can only be used to a limited extent, depending on requirements.

Personal Daten

In the Personal data section, each profile has the option of customizing the name and selecting the profile picture (either via the camera, selecting a photo from the album or selecting an icon from an icon collection).
Furthermore, the user can specify for which action authentication (Password, FaceID/TouchID if applicable) should take place in order to secure access to the profile or certain data.

Log out

The automatic logout option is used to automatically log the user out after leaving the app, if necessary with a delay. The Log out button can also be used to log out manually immediately.
Logging out is important if you share the device with several people, as only then will the profile be protected from access by another person (i.e. access to the profile may only be possible after entering a password and/or FaceID/TouchID).
Delayed logout after a certain period of time can be useful if you switch between apps frequently but do not want to log in again with a password each time. You can freely select the time period until logging out. A long period allows you to use other apps for a long time before you have to log in to iCab Mobile again, but if you share the device with other people, there is an increased risk that they will gain access to your profile. A short time period reduces the risk of others gaining access.

After logging out, the app displays a list of active profiles. You can then log in to these profiles by tapping on them.

Open iCab Mobile multiple times (iPad only)

On the iPad, iCab Mobile can also be opened multiple times and thus operated in several windows in parallel via split screen, slide-over or the stage manager. As of iOS 17, each instance of iCab opened in this way can even use a different user profile and thus actually work completely independently of each other (this is not possible before iOS 17, so all browsers have to share the same cookie/web storage, which is why several profiles cannot log in at the same time). New instances of iCab Mobile can be created by tapping on the three dots at the top of the screen and then on the large “+” symbol at the bottom. All existing instances are also displayed on the bottom screen after tapping the three dots at the top so that you can activate them by tapping them.
