Johannes Itten taught the foundation course at the Bauhaus. His wheel — three primaries, three secondaries, six tertiaries — remains the working tool of every classroom on this floor.

A WORD FROM THE CURATOR

Why we are showing the Bauhaus again, ninety years on.

It is fashionable, every so often, to declare the Bauhaus settled. The school closed in 1933. Its furniture has been in production for a century. Its ideas have been reduced to a recognizable square. There would seem to be very little left to learn.

And yet the archive — 412 works, 28 from this year alone — continues to teach the foundation course. The hand still draws the circle, the square, the triangle. The wheel still turns. Form and color remain rules we forget by Tuesday and remember by Friday. Welcome.

1895 — 1946 · HUNGARY → DESSAU → CHICAGO

Painter, photographer, designer, teacher. Joined the Bauhaus in 1923, ran the metal workshop, and shaped the new typography of the school's books and posters.

1895 Born in Bácsborsód, Hungary Trained as a lawyer before turning to painting.
